Top 10 ChatGPT Prompts for Digital Marketing (with templates)

AI has been the trend right now Today, let’s talk about ChatGPT, as everyone is excited about it, including me! As a digital marketer, I have been using it for a while, and this tool really blows my mind. The way it responds is just like a REAL HUMAN. (No Kidding! 😉)

In case you don’t know what is ChatGPT, it is an AI chatbot released by Open AI, you can think it like a human assistant, it takes your input like a question, and it generates human like response. That’s it. The current free version is based on GPT3.5, while the paid version ChatGPT Plus is the recently launched GPT4 model in March 2023.

And to get the “Perfect Response”, all of this associates with what we call a “ChatGPT prompt” – which is the question or instruction you input for getting your desired response. In this article, I will show you the top 10 common ChatGPT prompts for your day-to-day in digital marketing. If you’re ready? keep reading!

Prompt Engineering

Before we talk about each prompt, you need to first understand some basics of ‘Prompt Engineering’. If you have used ChatGPT for a while, you probably have noticed the more context you give to it, the more accurate response you would get. And this is what we call ‘Prompt Engineering’. To be specific, prompt engineering refers to the crafting of targeted and carefully designed instructions for language models like ChatGPT to generate a desired response.

Effective Prompting Rules

There are so many prompt principles to get a good response, but below are the top 6 that I found very effective whenever I include them in crafting my prompts.

1. The deliverable. That’s your ask. You must state clearly on your expected deliverable, so what’s the answer you want to get from it. An email draft? A simple piece of market research? Or just a simple suggestion.

2. Objective. What’s the objective for the ask? Encourage signups? Improve click rate? What’s the end goal you want to achieve through this task.

3. Act as. Include a perspective for ChatGPT to adopt in order to generate a relevant response. For example, a digital marketing expert, a paid ad strategist.

4. Tone. what should be the tone of the output. Casual tone? Friendly tone? Professional tone? Persuasive tone?

5.Format. What’s the expected format for the output, a bullet point, a table format, well formatted coding? Of course it is s smart, but if you can specify the format it will ensure an accurate result.

6. Target audience. Who is it for? The target audience can give the extra context to ChatGPT. I find it very useful when you use it for copywriting stuff and SEO content research.

Prompt #1. Paid Ad Copy

ChatGPT is very powerful in generating different ad copy ideas and I find it useful if you just want some quick ideas out of the box and get ad variations. You can try the below prompt, asking for ad copy ideas based on your target keywords, the Ad format, and the desired tone. The important thing here is to paste the landing copy in your input, so ChatGPT can generate output that really match your Ad landing page.

Prompt #1 Template

Act as a Paid Ads expert.

Create [Insert No.] Ad copies for a Google paid search campaign based on the landing page copy below, that target the keywords [Insert Keyword(s)], and target audience who are [Insert Target Audience], with an objective to drive clicks to the Ad and [Insert Action]. Format in [Insert Ad Format] with [Insert No.] headlines no more than [Insert Character Limits] characters each and [Insert No.] descriptions no more than [Insert Character Limits] characters each. Tone is [Insert Tone of Output].

[Insert LP Copy]

let’s try this example:

Amazing! You can see the response is pretty amazing and you can review them and make adjustment before you put them in your ad campaign. You can adjust it slightly and ask ChatGPT to just give ideas for your Ad headlines, Ad description, marketing slogans or creative taglines. Just be creative here and it will probably give you some surprising response from it.

Prompt #2. Keyword Research

As a digital marketer, you will come across lots of keyword research, good news is ChatGPT can give you tons of keyword ideas to start with. Let’s try this prompt, just include the key topic and the target audience. With a below prompt, you can instantly get a handy list of keywords to start with.

Prompt #2 Template

Act as a SEO expert.

Give me a list of the top keywords for the topic of [Insert Topic], target audience who are [Insert Target Audience].

Let’s try with this example:

You can also adjust it slightly to also find top semantic keywords, long-tail keywords, or relevant keywords to expand your keyword list. Keep in mind currently ChatGPT isn’t able to access keyword search volume, what I would do is put the keyword list back to other keyword research tools e.g. SEMRush, Ahref, Google Keyword Planner to identify the potential for each keyword.

Prompt #3. SEO-friendly Blog Outline

ChatGPT can increase your content creation productivity by 10 times, and I mean it. You can ask ChatGPT to create a blog outline quickly and it will save you lots of time structuring the article flow and researching the ideas to start with.

Try below prompt, ask it to create a SEO-Friendly blog outline about a certain topic, and remember to include your target audience and the goal of the blog in order to get a more accurate response.

Prompt #3 Template

Act as a professional copywriter.
Draft me a SEO-friendly blog outline about [Insert Blog Topic] , and target audience who are [Insert Target Audience], with an objective to [Insert Objective] and rank high on search engine result page. Include relevant keywords for each section. Tone is [Insert Tone]. Format in a bullet point.
Part of the output for Prompt #3.

Now, you get a pretty decent structure of your blog and you can make adjustment,  and I love how it also includes the keywords to highlight for each section for SEO. You can even ask it to generate a blog draft for each section to get something handy to start with.

Prompt #4. Optimize SEO Page Title

ChatGPT can be very creative because basically its knowledge is built on a huge amount of data. Therefore, it is very useful to optimize your SEO page title like below prompt. Ask ChatGPT to generate the SEO page title ideas based on the copy of the landing page. Since ChatGPT 3.5 cannot access URL, I will suggest you include the landing page content as part of your input for it to understand what your copy is about in order to generate some meaningful page titles.

Prompt #4 Template

Act as a SEO expert.
Give me [Insert No.] SEO-friendly page titles that are click-worthy for the [Insert Format: Blog/Product Page/Campaign Page, etc.] with copy below and target keyword [Insert Target Keyword] with an objective to drive high clicks on search result page. The title should not exceed 65 characters. Target audience who are [Insert Target Audience]. Tone in [Insert Tone].
[Insert LP Copy]

Put it into this example:

With ChatGPT, the job of crafting good SEO page title that usually takes an hour can now be shorten to a few seconds only. You can further modify the prompt a bit by specifying your requirement, like any keywords must include or must avoid, or to give input some relevant keywords for it to brainstorm more page title ideas out of the box.

Prompt #5. Email Subject Lines

When it comes to email marketing, email subject will almost determine the success or failure of your email campaign because people will only open your email if it’s click worthy. Below is the prompt I have used a lot in generating different email subject lines. Again, include your email body copy as part of the input to give more context to ChatGPT to draft more meaningful output.

Prompt #5 Template

Act as an email marketing expert.

Give me [Insert No.] high performing email subject lines for the email copy below, that are click-worthy for a high open rate with an objective to [Insert Objective]. Target audience who are [Insert Target Audience]. Each subject line should have no more than 60 characters. Tone is [Insert Tone].

[Insert Email Body Copy]

Example:

With just a few seconds, you will get a list of email subject lines. You can even turn it into a A/B testing campaign by asking ChatGPT to generate different email subjects and copy based on 2 sets of persona with different pain points.

Prompt #6. Social Media Post

Copywriting for social media is another popular use case from ChatGPT. While just simply ask ChatGPT to “write me a social media post”, you want to link it back with a specific action that you want the target audience to take. Try below prompt framework, specify your social platform, desired action, the tone and your target audience, also include the landing page copy to get a good response.

Prompt #6 Template

Act as a social media marketing expert.

Create a [Insert Social Platform] social post from the landing copy below which is about “[Insert Topic]” with an objective to attract followers to click the link to read the full copy. Target audience who are [Insert Target Audience]. Tone is [Insert Tone]. Keep it short and within [Insert Characters Limit] words.

[Insert LP Copy]
In the input, remember to include the landing page copy.

From the above example, you can see ChatGPT is so cool, its output even includes emojis and hashtags that’s ready to use for the social media posting. ChatGPT, you are really so considerate. Thank you!

Prompt #7. Persona Research

Before we go into this example, I am not saying you should skip your market research and only use ChatGPT to do it. However, if you really want to get some inspiration to start with, surprisingly, ChatGPT also does a good jobs in giving me some good response. Particularly, I found this super prompt from MakerBox can yield a great response.

Let’s try with below example: include the business nature and industry, the important thing here is to ask ChatGPT to include the problem, pains, job-to-be-done, motivations, trigger, barriers, context for the persona which is a typical framework that you would need for persona statement.

Prompt #7 Template

Act as a market research expert in which you have the expertise in [Insert Domain Knowledge].
Provide a detailed persona for a [Insert The Business] with an objective to understand the target audience and leverage them to define business positioning and create resonating marketing copy. Include all the criteria below:

- Name
- Role
- Problem (What issue do the persona want to solve?)
- Pain (What negative consequences of this problem drive the persona mad?)
- Jobs-To-Be-Done (What does the persona want to achieve?)
- Motivation (What drives the persona to complete the JTBD?)
- Trigger (What has pushed the persona to find a solution to the problem?)
- Barriers (What stops the persona from changing the status quo?)
- Context (What does the persona already know about the problem and other solutions?)
Part of the output for this prompt #7.

The full response output is really impressive as an initial starting point and it certainly gives some directions for drafting the marketing messaging and for further deeper research. However, you need to be very cautious with using ChatGPT for your persona research. I will still recommend you to talk with your target customers directly and validate the persona statement outputs to refine your positioning statement, and NOT to rely 100% on the ChatGPT output, because at the end you should be the one who understand your customer better than a chatbot.

Prompt #8. Landing Page Optimization

This is a little tricky, because ChatGPT 3.5 can’t access a landing page URL to provide suggestions, but we can ask it to provide what kind of content to include for conversion improvement. See this example, include your business, target audience and the specific action to take.

Prompt #8 Template

Act as a conversion optimization expert.
Provide suggestions on the type of content to include to a landing page about [Insert Business], with the objective to [Insert Action].
Target audience is [Insert Target Audience].
Part of the output for this prompt #8.

See! ChatGPT comes up with a list of actions and they are really awesome! The tip here is to combine it with your competitor analysis and customer research result, and to pick strategically on those that your audience really want.

Prompt #9. Product description for eCommerce

AI writing is not new in eCommerce, and for some marketplaces they have been using it for a while to scale their SEO. Now with ChatGPT, it becomes even more accessible to everyone, you should definitely use it to yield better results in SEO and shopping Ads campaign. Let’s try below prompt, include the basic product name, product type, the target audience, very important is to ask ChatGPT to include a click-worthy product title, description, and product highlights for the desired action.

Prompt #9 Template

Act as an Ecommerce marketing expert.
Give me a product description about the "[Insert Product Name]" to be listed on a [Insert Product Type] ecommerce site, with an objective to encourage the customers to read and add to cart for checkout. Target audience are [Insert Target Audience]. Tone is [Insert Tone]. Include the criteria below.

- Product Title (no more than 60 characters, include brand and important keyword to make it click-worthy)
- Description (brief description about the product in 2 sentences)
- Product highlights (key product features that audience will love to know and encourage checkout)
Part of output for Prompt #9

You can see! Isn’t it impressive? It can save you and your ecommerce team a tone of time of generating meaningful product description. You can even hint ChatGPT with some specific keywords if you already got some keyword ideas.

Prompt #10. Storyboard Outline

Occasionally, digital marketer like us also needs to brainstorm creative ideas on video production for social media or product launch or even the youtube video that I am shooting, and it usually take some time to research on the idea. Luckily, now we got ChatGPT to help on this.

So let’s try below prompt. Include your product, the target audience. Remember the more specific details you give about the business would be the better.

Prompt #10 Template

Act as a video production expert.
Give me a storyboard outline for a [Insert Minute] minute [Insert sizzle/product/type] video about a [Insert the Product/Service/Business] with an objective to grab the viewership of the audience and to [Insert Action] after watching. Target audience are [Insert Target Audience]. Tone is [Insert Tone].
Part of output for Prompt #10

ChatGPT will give you the details and voice-over by each scene, of course you will need to adjust to suit your product, brand tone and style or if you really need a VO. You can even hint it with more product features to get some more storyboard ideas.

You can see, basically you can ask ChatGPT for anything, and so the prompt list can be endless! Though, one thing to keep in mind,  you should have your own judgment to the ChatGPT output, always to do a fact check and make changes to the output to make it accurate to your audience, because at the end, we understand our brand and customer better better that ChatGPT does, and also we are digital marketers with critical thinking. Now, with all the ideas we discussed, you can create your own ChatGPT prompt list for digital marketing!
